Safety in cannabis cultivation

Tess Espejo has 17 years of experience with ULC. In 2019, she joined the Building and Life Safety Technologies group and is also the program lead on ULC's S4400 Standard for Safety of Premises, Buildings and Equipment Utilized for the Cultivation, Processing and Production of Cannabis. Tess will explain the development of the standard and implementation since its introduction last year.

With ULC Standards for 17 years, Tess has managed technical committees including the ULC Technical Committees on Fire Alarm and Life Safety, Security and Burglar Alarm Systems, Cannabis, UL/ULC Joint Technical Committees, and IEC/ISO mirror committees.

In August 2019, she moved to the Building and Life Safety Technologies group of ULC Inc, and now administers programs on Fire and Security Systems. The same year, she was appointed and now serves as a Member of the Standing Committee on Fire Protection for the 2025 edition of the National Building Code of Canada. From 2006 to 2019, she also served as Member of the Standing Committee on Hazardous Materials and Activities for the National Fire Code of Canada.

Tess is the Secretary for the ISO International Workshop on the safety, security and sustainability of cannabis facilities and operations (ISO IWA 37). She is also an Honourary Life Member of the Canadian Fire Alarm Association (CFAA), a member of the Canadian Security Association (CANASA), the Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE) and the Canadian Fire Safety Association (CFSA).
