Police say electrical contractors working at the university on Aug. 27 found a box containing two unloaded .45 calibre semi-automatic pistols in a false ceiling in the Earth Sciences building.

Campus security and Calgary police were notified.

Police say a person of interest was identified early in the investigation.

The person of interest and others were monitored and it was determined that the risk to students and staff was minimal.

Husayn Nathoo, 24, of Calgary faces 10 charges, including firearms and drug trafficking.

Nathoo will next appear in court on Friday, Nov. 6.

“The university did not receive any threats related to these weapons and at no point was the safety of students, faculty or staff jeopardized,” Rick Gysen of the university’s campus security said in a statement.
