Police say the gunman behind a fatal shooting at a daycare in Gatineau, Que., told staff to take the 53 children there to safety before he opened fire.

The shooter has been identified as Robert Charron. Police say he was armed with a registered hunting rifle when he entered the daycare Friday morning.

One of the staff members, 38-year-old Neil Galliou, was killed in the attack before Charron took his own life. Police consider it a case of murder-suicide. Police say Charron was the estranged husband of the daycare director, who had ended their relationship only days before.
