Tyco International has announced that its ADT North America Commercial Security business unit, a security systems integrator, is changing its name to Tyco Integrated Security.

The change comes in advance of the division of Tyco International into three independent companies. As part of that split, expected to be complete by September, ADT North America’s commercial and residential operations will separate. While the commercial business is being re-branded, the residential business will retain the ADT name.

The new name will be phased into use over the next few months.

“We wanted the name Tyco in the new name,” said Jay Hauhn, chief technology officer for Tyco Integrated Security. “Tyco is an extremely recognizable brand also [as is ADT]. We wanted Tyco in there, and “integrated” just to show the kinds of work we do. We are providing integrated solutions to our customers.”

The new company will start as a $2-billion business, he said. Tyco International is worth about $11 billion.

Hauhn said he cannot disclose much about organizational changes that might be in the works before September. The company is still considering how to set up structures that will best serve the companies.

“We’re going through right now a lot of committee work to determine how best to make the company work,” he said. “What is Tyco Integrated Security, and how that whole structure will be set up — the whole leadership team is working on that now.”

However, he stressed that the newly named Tyco Integrated Security will not be merged with Simplex Grinnell. Simplex Grinnell, he said, is a very recognizable brand. “So what used to be ADT Commercial will remain separate from Simplex Grinnell.”

The name change reflects the company’s continued commitment to the commercial market, said Brian McDonald, COO, Tyco Fire & Security, in a press release.

“We’re building on more than 100 years of experience in the commercial security industry and investing in the future to continue to deliver the most efficient and innovative security solutions to businesses.”

The company will continue to be known as ADT outside North America.
