The security industry, like many others, is facing staffing shortages as senior employees get closer to retirement. To continue to thrive, the profession must attract new generations of workers, embrace diversity and appeal to a broader demographic. Women in security, from new graduates to established professionals, share their career journeys and discuss next steps for the future of the industry.

Shawna Isaacson
Shawna Isaacson has over two decades of experience in commercial and residential sales, beginning her career in security distribution 25 years ago. She has leveraged this expertise to achieve success in her industry, culminating in her current role as the Western Canadian Business Develop manager for CDVI Americas, which she has held for the past seven years.

Val Michetti
Val Michetti has been in the security industry for 16 years. The first 12 years of her career were as an account executive in Montréal, Québec. In 2019, she moved to Vancouver and has since been working as a regional sales manager covering Western Canada and the Pacific Northwest (US) at HID.

Christine Hammond
Christine Hammond is the General Manager for Wilsons Security, based in Halifax, Nova Scotia. For the past 10 years in her career, Christine has transitioned from coordinating security service and installation for national clients, to a leadership role focused on business operations, IT and infrastructure management, human resources, and strategic planning. Christine is passionate about organizational culture, team development and operational efficiency.

Roxanne Smith
Roxanne Smith is an experienced and accomplished security professional with over 25 years of operational experience in the public safety and security industry. With a dynamic and results-driven approach, Roxanne has built a reputation as a leader in the field, with expertise in communications, sales and business development. Her extensive background in public safety and security operations has prepared her for a wide range of roles, including Public Safety Facilitation, Manager of Crime Prevention and Community Policing, Supervisor of 911 Operational Communications Centre, and her current role of eight years as an Account Executive with Paladin Technologies.

Shelby Ballantyne
Shelby Ballantyne was introduced to the security industry in 1992 through a work placement opportunity with Honeywell Protection Services, where she spent the next 8 years in a variety of administrative and operational roles. When ADT Security Services acquired Honeywell in 2000, she had an opportunity to transition to a sales role and found her true passion in sales and leadership. Since the acquisition of ADT Canada by Telus in 2019, she expanded her responsibility to support both the Central & Eastern Canadian sales teams. Currently, Shelby is Strategic Programs Director for Smart Building & Commercial Building Solutions at Telus, bringing over 30 years of industry experience in security and automation solutions. She prides herself on building trust by empowering business ownership across her team and challenging the status quo to improve both the team members’ and the customers’ experience. The key to her success has been through building relationships, enabling her teams and to never stop learning. When the pandemic hit in 2020, she was instrumental in unlocking innovative ways for the sales team to continue to grow the business, while maintaining safety protocols and providing exceptional customer service.
