Self-defence training ordered for youth jail guards

A Labour Ministry inspector has ordered self-defence training and protective equipment for guards at the Roy McMurtry youth jail in Brampton after a series of violent attacks that prompted a lockdown, according to the employees’ union.

Three guards were injured during a June 14 fight with seven youth and a female guard was attacked and injured by an inmate two days later.

The unarmed guards, called youth service officers, want the Ministry of Children and Youth Services to allow them to carry handcuffs and pepper spray.
