Security firm offers $10,000 reward in Toronto armoured car robbery
By The Canadian Press
News RetailTORONTO — A security company is offering a reward of up to $10,000 for the arrest and conviction of those responsible for robbing one of its armoured cars outside a Toronto mall.
Investigators say Garda’s security guards were making a delivery on Jan. 20 at Fairview Mall when a silver 2000 Dodge Caravan pulled up alongside and two armed men confronted the guards.
Shots were exchanged between the security guards and the suspects but police say there were no reports of anyone being injured.
Police say the suspects grabbed a money bag before fleeing and the getaway van was later found abandoned about a kilometre away.
The van was examined by forensic officers and some “trace evidence” was found for possible comparison to suspects, Staff Insp. Mike Earl said Wednesday.
Security video of the robbery has been posted on the Toronto police YouTube channel and anyone with information is asked to contact police or Crime Stoppers.
“We’ve had some tips … but at this point in time the information has gone dry,” Earl said.
Investigators would also like to speak with a woman who purchased the getaway vehicle for $800 on Jan. 10 from an ad on Kijiji. She is described as black, five feet six inches tall and 160 pounds, with long hair and a round face.
Earl says it’s possible the woman may have been “duped” by the two male suspects involved in the robbery.
Police say one of the holdup suspects wore gloves, a ski mask, a black-and-grey sweater and black pants, and the other was disguised with a mask and wearing gloves.
Both suspects were armed with handguns. Earl said the amount taken in the robbery was “just under $100,000” but would not give the exact amount.
Police want to get these suspects off the street, Earl said, adding the holdup was definitely organized and planned by people with no regard for public safety.
“If you’re gonna rob an armed guard that has a 40-calibre Glock on his side, you’re taking a heck of a risk and you’re putting the citizens of Toronto at risk,” he said.
