Sask. laying off court screening personnel

Sixteen deputy sheriffs who provide perimeter screening at courthouses in Saskatchewan have been laid off and the province is undertaking a tendering process to have a private company take over these duties, the Regina Leader Post reports.

Attorney General and Justice Minister Gord Wyant Wyant said the layoffs are taking place because, “We believe it can be done in a more cost-effective way.” He continued: “I don’t want to give any general numbers, but it wouldn’t be certainly in the millions dollars.”
