The Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Ontario has designated Toronto-based Route1 Inc. as a Privacy by Design (PbD) Ambassador for its commitment to secure remote access and identity management.

The company’s MobiKEY provides multi-factor authentication to ensure the identity of an individual attempting to remotely access data, which integrates privacy protocols for both the user and the institution.

A security and identity management company, Route1 customers include both government and military organizations in the U.S. and Canada, as well as private sector businesses such as law firms, health-care facilities and financial institutions.

Privacy by Design, recently included by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission as one of its three recommended practices for protecting online privacy, is a framework developed by Ontario’s privacy commissioner Dr. Ann Cavoukian to promote the philosophy of embedding privacy proactively in technology itself.

“Now an international standard, Privacy by Design seeks to proactively embed privacy into the design specifications of information technology, accountable business practices and networked infrastructure,” said Dr. Ann Cavoukian, Ontario’s Information and Privacy Commissioner, in a statement.  “Without question, one of the safest actions to take with regard to the mobile workforce is to keep the data within the network and not allow it to be downloaded onto a remote device.  With MobiKEY, Route1 didn’t just meet a strong standard for privacy, they exceeded it.”
