The Ottawa Public Library plans to spend nearly $1 million over the next two years to improve security at its Main Library downtown, particularly in the children's section.
Specifically, the library intends to reduce shelving height in the children’s area, relocate the service desk to allow better monitoring of the area, remove temporary walls near the entrance, set up a restricted area accessible only to staff, and, finally, consolidate its bookable public computers on the third floor, all in the name of security and safety.
The reasons for the upgrade stem, at least in part, from an incident in February in which man exposed himself to a 12-year-old girl in the children’s section.
