Nancy Newton was the Coordinator of the Protection, Security and Investigation Program at Fleming College in Peterborough, Ont., as well as a valued and hands-on contributor to the Canadian professional security community.

Nancy held her position at Fleming from 2003 until she was forced to step away following a cancer diagnosis. She passed away on Dec. 16, 2017.

Remembered by Fleming faculty, Nancy was "vibrant, giving and she influenced all she met with her infectious laughter and spirited use of the English language! She made the workplace a positive place to be, and her energy and the sound of her jingling bracelets will be missed in the Justice hallway. The difference she made in the lives of all of those who knew her will be forever cherished. Her smile would light up a room and one could not help but laugh with her perfectly timed and clever comments."

In 2013, Nancy was recognized by the Toronto chapter of ASIS International, which named her Security Educator of the Year as part of its annual Security Practitioner and Law Enforcement awards program. She was interviewed for an article in Canadian Security magazine in 2016, where she encouraged students interested in pursuing a career in security to acquire a wide body of knowledge and become good communicators.

Nancy was also instrumental in the success of Canadian Security magazine's Security Career Expo events, particularly in the early days of the conference, when she served on an advisory board. She helped with seminar and speaker suggestions, and spread the word to students who might benefit. Nancy's support was invaluable and her enthusiasm for the topic infectious.

A service for Nancy will be held at Ross Funeral Chapel in Port Hope, Ont. on Tuesday, Dec. 19.

What a wonderful woman Nancy was! I will never forget how strong and confident she was infront of the classroom, she was very inspiring.

Nancy will certainly be missed by her colleagues and students. It was a pleasure to see her every year at the Program Coordinators conference and catch up.

Prays to her family.
