EDMONTON — The owner of an Edmonton cannabis store says authorities have told him he's not allowed to use his smoke-generating security system.

Alternative Greens owner Trevor Miller says the system floods the business with smoke when it's triggered, and that thieves can't steal what they can't see.

But Miller says the Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Commission told him after an inspection this week the system violates the rules.

According to the commission, any form of smoke fogging security system is in violation of the Retail Cannabis Store Handbook, which stipulates that camera systems provide a clear image 24/7.

Miller and an antique store owner who also sells the security systems are challenging the rule.

He says it seems like the commission would rather watch a crime than prevent it.
