Near-doubling of Canada spy watchdog suggests shift to super agency

News Public SectorThe near-doubling of funding for Canada’s chief security intelligence watchdog could signal a gradual move to a single super-agency to oversee the country’s expanding national security apparatus, say experts.
Last Tuesday’s federal budget appears to have responded to widespread public concern about oversight of federal spies by upping annual spending for the Security Intelligence Review Committee (SIRC), the National Post reports. It will receive an additional $12.5 million over five years, with $2.5 million annually thereafter. Averaged out, SIRC’s budget will climb to about $5.3 million annually, almost double the current $2.8 million, which has flatlined in recent years.
