Feds consider new tools to improve online security

News Data Security hackingThe Toronto Star reports that Shared Services Canada could restrict online access among public servants, including preventing access to gambling, shopping and pornography sites, in an effort to improve overall online security. Shared Services is considering the purchase of a "unified threat management" platform that would also improve online security through the provision of firewalls, virus scanning, VPNs and more.
According to the story:
The system envisioned by the central IT agency includes the ability to monitor government networks in real-time, from individual web traffic to department-wide analysis. The UTM would need to cover everyone from bureaucrats working from home to massive public offices in Ottawa.
The system would also prevent bureaucrats from accessing a range of websites in the first place. The list of blacklisted websites is long, and includes pornography or sex sites, content spouting “hatred” or “racism,” “illegal” sites, sites promoting violence, online gambling, Internet games, sites known to distribute malware, shopping sites, as well “sports.”
