Federal govt. kicks off cybersecurity month with “device appreciation” theme

October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month and the Government of Canada is aiming to appeal to Canadians’ sense of familiarity and even friendship with the devices they use every day.

According to the “Get Cybersafe” government website, “This campaign is focused on helping all Canadians be more secure online, by being informed and knowing the simple steps to take to protect themselves, their families, their workplace, and their devices. The month is divided in to weekly themes which highlight different aspects of cyber security. This year, we’re focusing on protecting the things we care about most — our devices.”

A five-week campaign includes the weekly themes: Taking stock, phone week, computer week, network week and smart device week. Advice is dispensed on each category, including updating your OS, recognizing phishing schemes, using Wi-Fi safely, and making the most of IoT at home and in small businesses.

Canadian Security is kicking off its own Cybersecurity week Oct. 26-30. Highlights will include: videos, news and features, interviews with experts, a cyber-survey, and a webinar, “Digital Forensics in Intellectual Property Theft Litigation,” which will presented Oct. 28 at 1PM EST by sponsor Envista Forensics.
