Calgary is announcing an immediate action plan to make its city transit system safer amid growing security concerns.

Mayor Jyoti Gondek says that transit would have twice the number of contracted security guards and that would be tripled by the end of April.

Gondek says the transit system is to have an increased number of overnight patrols, pairing police officers and community peace officers for seven nights a week.

Passengers would hear frequent announcements at stations about surveillance and that the transit is for users only.

The city also plans to increase the number of CCTV cameras and improve lighting on CTrain platforms for all downtown stations.

Gondek says these steps could be crucial to restoring safety and trust with Calgarians.
