This student appreciation event, sponsored by the college and Condor Security Inc., gave students in post-secondary security programs from multiple institutions the chance to mingle with one another and meet with professionals in the security field.
The evening featured speeches from several ASIS members, who talked about the value of the organization’s mentorship program, for both potential mentors and mentees. Students were encouraged to reach out to professionals to kick start their career development, while professionals were incentivized with points towards certain ASIS certifications for taking part.
Keynote speaker James A. Acevedo, president of security consulting firm StarRiver Inc. and an expert in unmanned systems and automation, talked about the opportunities and perils of drones. His presentation illustrated a future in which our skies will be filled with ever increasing numbers of flying robots performing crucial tasks and making our lives easier. However, he warned that as this technology becomes more ubiquitous, it will give nefarious actors access to effective and easy ways to cause mayhem.
Acevedo ended with a demonstration of a drone that flew without the aid of a remote, able to follow his movements through facial recognition software. A harbinger of things to come perhaps.
