British Columbia’s new Security Services Act (SSA), which passed third reading nearly a year and a half ago, finally came into force Sept. 1.
As the long-awaited Private Security and Investigative Services Act (formerly Bill 159) takes hold in Ontario, the industry sounds off on battling red tape, the pros and cons of portable licensing, and whether customers and the public will be better served under the Act.

Minister of Foreign Affairs to deliver keynote at security conference

Leading experts from Canada and around the world will be gathering in Ottawa at the end of the month to explore security best practices.
It’s been two years since the Ontario Ministry of Community Safety
and Correctional Services first announced it was going to overhaul
legislation governing private investigators and security guards, and
the man in charge of leading the development of Bill 159 says it won’t
be complete by the anticipated time frame of spring 2007.
The registrar and director of the Private Security and Investigative Services Branch overseeing the development of the new Act governing private security in Ontario, Jon Herberman, has scheduled public meetings to present the new Private Security and Investigative Services Act, 2005, which will take effect on Aug. 23, 2007.
