Ontario's head of corporate security talks social networking. Who gets access to Facebook and Twitter at the provincial government?
Ontario has a very matter of fact policy when it comes to use of government IT resources, says Peter McCauley, Head of Corporate Security: “We’ve got a very strong acceptable use policy. In a nutshell, it says you can only use government equipment to do government business.


Bill C-60: An ‘arresting’ change to the Criminal Code
Much has been talked about regarding the amendment to deal with sections of the Criminal Code that address self defence and the power of an ordinary citizen to make a lawful arrest. It follows the case of David Chen, a Toronto grocer who made headlines when he detained a shoplifter.


Hacking incident could be largest government breach to date
Last month cyber attackers from China allegedly hacked into both the Finance Department and the Treasury Board of Canada. Information must have been streaming out causing officials to shut down the system  in its entirety.

Video retention policies — how long are you storing video surveillance footage?
Hospitals have wrestled with the development of video retention policies since the privacy commissioner issued its “Guidelines for the Use of Video Surveillance Cameras in Public Places” four years ago. Canadian Security talks to hospital security managers from four of the largest hospitals in Toronto about how they have worked together to come up with retention polices that address all concerns. Legal expert Elliott Goldstein also weighs in with his opinion.

Nova Scotia auto mall drives access control
With five separate businesses to secure and an employee base of 200 people at auto mall one location, O’Regan’s needed to implement an access control system that would be easy to manage, enable managers to limit access to secure areas, such as its IT room and parts departments, and allow each business unit to operate at different hours, if needed. They selected EntraPass Global Edition software from Kantech, integrated with a DSC PowerSeries alarm control panel, to effectively manage access control cards and the overall system remotely, and integrate the entire alarm system with video.
